HE IS ALIVE!!! That is the Easter message and has been for 2022 years.
You don’t have to believe it; most didn’t and still don’t. Mountains of history chronicles the abuse of those who believe in Christ and the gospels supporting His message. As one who grew up in a Congregational church, where skepticism is part of one’s religious education, I understand the impulse to question dogma - primarily “Roman”, but also “Puritan”: learn everything, then make a determination for yourself. That method offered to 14-year-olds gave us a full year to attend houses of worship across many faiths. It was a reliable and often accurate model.
In that year, we teens attended countless services at synagogues, mosques, Catholic masses, Hindu temples, Greek Orthodox rites, and quiet Amish gatherings. At the end of the year, as now-educated people, we were expected to determine whether we wanted to join The Church. We had to write an essay explaining our decision.
I’ve heard, for most of my life, that religious people are intolerant. Does that program, in 1973, strike you as an intolerant program? Seems very open-minded to me.
I could and should say goofy things about this strip and what it was like to amuse the kids in a New England snowscape (we were very big on egg hunts), but I recognize what I’m missing. This is a Christian event – the most important to anyone of the Christian faith. That it’s become a reason to sell Cadbury Eggs makes me ask this: Why are the most holy days for Christians a commercial enterprise? How would other religions respond?
